About Jennifer Espinet-Portell

Jennifer Espinet-Portell was born in Cuba and moved to Miami in 1996. She earned her bachelor's degree in English, with a minor in International Relations, at Florida International University, then her law degree at FIU College of Law. She is admitted to The Florida Bar and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

She founded J.P. Law Firm, Inc. in Miami, where she practices foreclosure defense, family law, estate planning and immigration — and works with clients in English and Spanish.

Practice areas

  • Foreclosure defense — options for homeowners who have fallen behind on the mortgage, before and after a foreclosure case is filed.
  • Family law — divorce and family matters, including what happens to the marital home.
  • Estate planning — wills, trusts and planning ahead so an estate doesn't end up stuck.
  • Immigration — citizenship and family-based petitions.

How we work together

When one of Jennifer's clients has equity in a home but needs funds — to pay off arrears before a sale, to hold a property while a case is resolved, or to buy out a spouse or co-owner — I review the financing side while her office handles the legal side. We agree up front on who talks to the client and how updates are shared. I explain what the loan needs and what's still outstanding; counsel keeps strategy and deadlines.

Financing is reviewed individually and is never a substitute for legal advice. If the numbers don't work, I say so early, so the legal strategy can account for it.
